AMD FX-8150 Running Hot?

Had this machine about a year and lately, it shuts itself down after 10+ minutes of being idle. I did once notice a message about CPU temp, but the problem went away for a month or so. I use this as a home server so, shutting down while idle is a MAJOR issue.

Started looking at a few boards and loaded CPUID just to get some ideas. CPU is air cooled and temps run around 65C to 72C on average. "Package" temps run 55C to 70C on average. Seems exceptionally high from what I've read.

I have an Obsidian 800D Tower with 2 140mm fans in addition to the fan on the CPU which I thought would be more than sufficient cooling. Am I missing something here, or would liquid cooling be an option? This is a home-based biz computer and downtime is lost $$$.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

There is excessive dust (and dog hair) in this environment, but I clean it at least weekly, so blockage isn't (or doesn't appear to be) an issue. Also, there's a filter at the bottom of the case I clean regularly. Nope, I've yet to attempt to overclock and, for my typical use, likely never will. The lower and bay fans draw in, and the upper rear fan discharges. The CPU fan is the CPU fan. I did put a small desk fan on the top of the case (opening for water cooler radiator mount) aimed towards the discharge fan, and it cooled CPU temps to the lowest (60C) I've seen in the few days I've been monitoring this. However, while this was running today and I was on another immediately proximate machine doing something else, after around 10 minutes it still shut down on its own. Win7 Pro (64 bit) with no hibernation set if that matters. Thanks.

I have not, and appreciate your response. I had a friend do the build, so I don't have any paste. But I'll sure get my hands on some. Any thoughts on the temps it's running at? Seems high based on what I'm reading in general, but thoughts are all over the board. When I bought the parts for the build I pondered a liquid cooler, but the case seemed so large with sufficient fans and airflow, I figured I was OK. Working on the paste suggestion. Thanks.

Temps are definitely high. 62C max on the package temp is what AMD advises.

You could do a water cooler, but since your not overclocking (do you game on it at all?) then its not really necessary. Unless you want to make your build quiet, then water is also the way to go. I always recommend a Corsair H80i:

If you are itching to get this done fast, Best Buy should carry some brand of thermal compound.

I'll dig some compound (proper obviously) up. No, I don't game on it, but do a bit of graphical work and occasionally compound mathematics. This was an "overkill" build to keep from having to upgrade every other year (large case, 8 core processor, Asus 990FX board, 32G Corsair memory, 1250W power supply, dual Sapphire 7770 Vid Cards, etc. ). I had the friend that built it burn it in with his "gamer" son, who didn't want to give it back...haha. Well, it was flawless for a year... I'll get back as soon as I try the paste suggestion. Also, I was looking at the Corsair 100i, which my Corsair case is set up to fit. Still, kind of strange how it only happens at idle time, and not while I'm working. Thanks.
