Hi,

I have a 400 Watt AMP and I am trying to set the Gain however I just have a few questions I need to ask.. (I already know I need to look for 20V on the Multi meter)

The AMP has 3 settings.. Gain..Bass and Treble.. My question is.. When setting the Gain Should I keep the Bass Boost on Full or Half?

If the Bass Boost is set on 0 I get no sound from the Sub woofer so setting it on 0 is no option for me. Its either Half way up, on Max or is it my own choice where I want to put the knob?

Another question is .. I already set the Gain ones with the Bass Boost set to around Half BUT the speaker was moving like shit! However I got no clipping noises etc.. Is this normal or should I turn the Gain down to prevent blowing out voice coils?

The quick answer is set the gain, then increase the bass level as necessary. Keeping an ear open for over modulation in the form of audible distortion, pops or crackling noises. The multimeter would be helpful but is not necessarily required. Also be careful that the amp is capable of 400 watts under the appropriate load. Load is resistance measured in Ohms, probably 4 or 8 ohms.

An amplifier that provides more "wattage" than required is sufficient. You'd essentially keep the volume low enough not to pop the speaker. However, an amp that does NOT provide enough "wattage" will run the risk of melting the voicecoil at a much higher rate than the inverse.

Think of it in terms of a machine needing a certain amount of water to operate. Too much water is OK provided you can control the flow by closing the valve or let the water spill out. But if not enough water is available, the machine will strain to operate. Resulting in an inevitable malfunction or failure.

A more in depth answer is possible if you provide the model numbers of you amp and any other equipment used, speakers, EQ, crossover, etc.

The AMP model number is Tornado I-AMPM202 400Watt .. The speaker is a NeXt 350Watt, I would say it is either 10inch or 12inch. The amp has 3 settings Gain, Bass Boost and Treble. Without the Bass Boost setting either set to half or full the AMP will not give any power to the Subwoofer. This means I cannot leave the Bass Boost after the Gain. I checked for 20Volts on the AMP using a Multi Meter which I did get however the bass sounds so shit :/ .. I am going to try again to set the Gain however I need some help because it is really confusing -,- .. How do I figure out the OHMS of my speaker? I tried using a multi meter and got the reading "066" < how many OHMS would that be??
