Regarding the PSU. The "gold" certification describes how much power the PSU needs to draw from the wall to deliver the specified 550w. So whether it's "bronze" or "gold" it will still deliver 550w. But "gold" will produce slightly less heat because less excess waste. On the other hand if it's "gold" it's probably also a good quality PSU. But SOME PSU's with for example bronze rating might still be of adequate quality.

Ok, realised you're in New Zeeland. Prices are a bit higher than what i'm comparing with.

My justification for buying an i3 instead of the usually recommended FX-6300 was that I though I could spend less on motherboard and PSU. But a system with an overclocked FX-6300 I think will perform better than the i3, most of...

I'm building an Intel i3 system too. Bought the parts, just waiting for the case. I comparison to your build, I spent a little less on the case and I bought the cheapest H81m motherboard I could find, with limited PCI expansion and one PCIe 2.0. I also got a 270x instead of a 260x. And got the i3-4330 because it was only 10$ more (there is no performance difference from the 4130 basically, but it had the 4600 integrated graphics)

I decided against the 260x because from reviews it seems to be right on the edge of playable on some settings. Basically it's not quite good enough. And the 270x w battlefield, at the time was only 25$ more.

I also spent a lot less on a XFX Core 550w, supposedly a good PSU, but will have to see how that turns out. Maybe you can find a good rated PSU at a cheaper price than the one you picked.

But a system with an overclocked FX-6300 I think will perform better than the i3, most of the time. It will perform better in BF4 for example. So if you can get an FX-6300 system for about the same as the i3-4130 then most people would recommend AMD.
