i have was wondering if it was possible to update from windows 7 to 8.1 without having to delete personal files (such as music, photos, movies, games etc) that are all stored on the desktop in user created folders?

Solution
Yes, performing an upgrade will retain your files and compatible applications from the Win 7 install.

Also, you should always make a backup of your personal files just in case of a problem during the upgrade.

Windows does not 'update' Steam games. Steam/Valve does that.
