Replace a Core 2 Duo with an i5?

You will need a new Mobo as well. The C2D is a LGA775 and the i5's are LGA115X they are not compatible nor interchangeable.

no because you'd need to get a new motherboard the old motherboard will not support an i5 regardless of what generation it is

No, you generally can not replace parts in a laptop, unless they are the exact same parts that you had before hand. The only laptops that you can swap for different CPUs and GPUs are the really high-end gaming laptops and even then most of those you are unable to change the parts. Plus Core 2 Duo is on a different socket than the i5 line.
