I have an old computer an i3 and it runs a Nvidia GT 240 512 MB GPU on a 280 W PSU. The fan isn't working anymore.

I know my card is old but I don't really want to spend a lot of money upgrading this computer considering I'll probably buy a new one down the road so in the mean time please let me know of any slight upgrade from the GT 240 that will let me still run on a 280 watt PSU. Thanks!

check with the gpu vendor see if the card under warranty. if the card still works a replacment fan would be 10.00 part and 9.00 for some thermal paste. if your going to buy a newer pc if your going to build it then buy a newer larger power supply and a better gpu you then can move them into a new pc when your ready.

Actually the fan just came off...it could just be the fan issue. Is it best to take it to a repair shop and have them reattach the fan?

you can get a GPU which will run rings around the 240 for about $80. The repair shop will charge you $60/hr to think about it, and they're slow thinkers.

I have a friend who owns a repair shop so he will do it for me for a lot cheaper than the other stores. What are some that you recommend that will be higher than the GT 240 and still run under a 280W PSU

I'd still be tempted to get a better GPU. The R7-240 will get you about 50% more performance, but if you could get a HD 7750 or GTX650, this would give you about 3x more performance for around $80-100 (the AMD cards have actually gone up in price from a low of around $70). Both should be ok with your PSU

But if you're not too bothered about performance now as you're buying something better later on, then just go for the cheapest option now.
