I have a Cooler Master HAF 912 case, and have been using it for nearly a year. I did notice, over the course of my regular cleaning of the interior, that it gets dustier than other machines that I've seen. I believe that the top "grate" is to blame here - it's clearly for a water-cooling closed loop kit, but I don't have any use for that. I cover it with cloth at night, but is it safe to leave covered even when the machine is running? It's on and doing work for most of the day even if I'm not sitting at it, so I want to minimize dust getting in.

Check your temperatures with the grate open. At idle and under load.
Then cover the grate, and repeat.
If the temperatures are very different, don't cover the grate.
If the difference is only a couple of degrees, don't worry.

You might also consider using a filter type cloth instead of some type of tight weave cloth. Usually you can find some type of air filter material at your local hardware store that you can cut with scissors to fit any fan opening.

It is a way to let heat escape! I would not cover it, most dust comes in through intake fans with out dust filters!
