I assume you will be using Windows so don't forget the extra 100$ for that.
Aside from that, things look pretty good. You may want to get another opinion on the selection of parts though, as I haven't done very much work with AMD.

EDIT: Rationale's additions are a good choice too.

Exactly.
If your dad doesn't play video games, or do anything demanding then basically almost ANY setup will work in which case an APU or Intel i5/i3-4xxx CPU (a model with a GPU) might be better, however I recommend an SSD (windows/apps) + hard drive (for backup/mass storage). If he does game, then drop the SSD to save money towards a better graphics card.

So I can't comment until this is resolved, though I would recommend an ASUS or Gigabyte board instead. Also, a 1TB drive is only a couple more dollars than a 500GB.

You will also need Windows, and for that I strongly suggest Windows 8.1 64-bit, but get Start8 from Stardock since he likely won't use the new interface at least not right away (you can bypass that COMPLETELY).

For Windows 8.1 you can Google how to boot directly to the desktop which involves two steps:
1) change to boot directly to desktop, and
2) change to bypass the LOGIN screen
