Can I play content from my external hard drive wirelessly?

You would need other hardware to make it work wireless.
You could use a router that allows USB hard drives to be connected and shared(not all models have this feature so you have to check the specs). Please note some routers may want a different system format on the drive, I would backup any times before trying this.
Another computer connected to the same network could have the drive connected and share it as well.
Last but not least many newer NAS(network attached storage) devices have the built in ability to not only stream audio/video in your house, but also some allow streaming over the internet. Some of these features may also be available on the right router.
