MSI Radeon R9 290 4GB vs MSI GeForce GTX 780 4GB

I can't decide which one, I know that the R9 290 has better specs, but the reviews are much better for the GTX 780

the 780 is only 3GB, but that shouldn't matter for 1080. What res are you gaming at? Personally, I got the R9-290 as it was $90 cheaper for me, had 4GB (I game on 3 monitors) and generally had better performance in the games I play (read lots of benchmark reviews). I also needed the Sapphire flex DVI outputs. Cooling is not an issue with aftermarket coolers. 780 is generally more power efficient.

You'll get more fps on most games with the 780. Either is more than enough for 1080p play. I'd go Asus for the 780 and Sapphire for the 290.

If you're only gaming at 1080p then the ASUS GTX 780 DCUII http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DWV3NM6 would give you better overall performance.

Anything over 3GB VRAM would go to waste and the 780 is much quieter and power efficient.

no, it can o/c like a beast (but so can the R9) and it will be better in certain games, Watchdogs springs to mind. Choose which games you are most likely to play, then look for reviews of both the 780 and R9, they generally have benchmarks of the latest games, see which one performs best for your games.

If that's inconclusive, get the one with the best price and cooler. Again for me, the R9 Tri-x was the cheapest and had the best cooler and flex DVI output.

According to TechPowerUp, they are pretty much neck and neck. I would go for the GTX 780 because it will be quieter, even with the same cooler, due to its more efficient GPU with less transistor density. The 780 will always run at its rated speeds, while the 290 has a tendency to throttle below its stock clocks when pushed hard. That may not happen so much with a Twin Frozr cooler, but its still an indication of a major design flaw in the 290 series. The GK110 chip in the GTX 780 is an overall more refined chip than the Hawaii chip in the 290, which has sacrificed power efficiency and heat generation for performance. Lastly, with the 780 you'll get better driver support, and access to unique Nvidia technologies like PhysX, Adaptive VSync, FXAA, TXAA, HBAO+, Geforce Experience, Shadowplay, etc. Adaptive VSync alone makes the 780 worth it.

Hi, I know this thread is almost dead, but im in the same position, Im leaning towards the 780 but Wich brand and model of 780 is best for £330 max, (try to use GBP)

Will the R9 290 have higher frame rates than the Msi GTX 780 Twin Frozr on crysis 3 and source mod games (Tf2 - Portal - Hald Life 2(#makeHL3))
If so can you suggest the best 290 for £330 Max, Twin Frozr maybe?

Sorry, I can't recommend a 290 over a GTX 780 for Valve games. Nvidia cards always have and always will perform better than AMD on Valve games. That includes Half-Life 3 when it comes out, right around the time I'm ready to retire.
