Hi Everyone,

I'm in a right dilemma as to which graphics card to go for to make sure I can completly Max out Watch Dogs when it comes out. I'm torn between 7970 and R9 290x, now as a general rule of thumb the 7970 is superb for anything on and within 1080p. But I have my doubts that fully maxing out Watch Dogs with AA and so forth may prove too much for the 7970. I should note I got rid of my old gaming rig which had a VTX3D 7970 and Assassins Creed IV could really slaughter the FPS with AA and another setting (not sure what it was) on 1080p hence why I'm debating if the 7970 stands a chance?

As of yesterday the "recommended" specifications where officially released requiring a 7850, I highly doubt that reflects Ultra settings though.

so far I can get a

R9 290x battlefield 4 edition for £290 new.

7970 for around £150

My Rig

I5 4440s 2.8GHz (will likely upgrade to 3770k)
Samsung 840 EVO
6GB DDR3

Cheers for any input.

@leeb2013 - I was reading on a few websites that price to performance that the 290x was the better option? I could get the 290x for £290 and I think I seen an Gigabyte or MSI 290 for £249.99 if I'm not mistaken?

@rolli59 - The 780ti is well out my price range, you're lucky (from my findings) to pick one up for £400, and yes the r9 290x is a safe bet, but it could also prove a waste of £100+ if I don't pick wisely. I'm hoping to get a good range of opinions and decide based on that. But you made a good poj t that it could rely more on CPU thanthe Graphics Card which would explain the low requirements

The 3770k Is a 3rd gen High-end Ish CPU that can be overclocked (if you dont already know) I'd probably pick up a 4670 (as you cant fit a LGA 1155 Into a LGA 1150 Socket and this CPU is stronger and less money [€232.60 for the 3rd gen, €152.85 for the 4th])

For GPU, depending on what you want you price range is, Either the R9 290x (seems really nice for €240, and you can OC it to get better performance) Or, a GTX 770 or GTX 760ti (can also be overclocked)

What is your price range?

EDIT: +1 to rolli59

EDIT 2: Whats the Powersupply you got? We need the amperage so we can tell what GPU you can run.

@rolli59 - Yes that's correct, but I'd rather get other peoples opinions and see what most people would tend to do and why. I mean the other chap reccomended a 290 and I've just done it a little further digging and found I could get one for around £220 so that's a new option :)

@xyloriuphon - thank you for the detailed input, and that's great to know about the CPU. As for price range I could afford anything really, but I don't want to buy something for the sakes of it or bragging rights (as a small portion do)

And the 770 is a good price, bit after looking into benchmarks I think the 7970 beat it if I'm not mistaken?

As for a 760ti I've never gave that much thought, I assumed the 770 was more powerful and since the 7970 beat it in some benchmarks I wouldn't have thought to look at the 760ti.

Also I'm not sure youre already aware, but I'm buying in £s not $s :)

Thanks for your input :)

You gotta watch for the type of PSU's, The CX psu's arent really made for gaming, I would probably go with the 770 or 780 (even 780ti if you can) or the 290x, Either one would be good, (its better to go with a newer GPU, because its newer, and, yeah, doesnt need explaining :D)

EDIT: You can try to get a EVGA 600B PSU, there a great little unit, have it running in my friends computer for a month now, 49A on the 12v Rail. Should support most, if not, all cards.

EDIT2: 38A wont run a 780. So you might have to stick with a 760 or r9 280

@xyloriuphon - Thanks for your input, it seems that the 770, 780, 290 and 290x are my options. I've done a little more digging around specifically looking for benchmarks and the r9 290x gives the best price to performance, I've read that the 770 is more suitable to be put against the 280x where as the r9 290x around the performance of a 780 with a lower price. And best of all the guy who's selling the 290x lives by me so that's an added bonus. I'm expecting £250 - £290 for the card

And as for the PSU I'll definitely get the model you're on about, I've just got to hope someone buys the 4440s so I can upgrade to the CPU you recommended which looks great.

Thanks again :)
