HDD Storage Bay Failing...What could it be??

I have a Sans Digital TR8M+B 8 bay HDD storage unit that connects via 2 Firewire cables to a SATA Port Multiplier card.

The problem is that the hard drives freeze during transfers or any data access. I plug them directly into the motherboard -- ZERO issues. Speed is fine, SMART data is fine, transfers are fine. I plug them back into the unit, and the freezes start again.

I replaced the RAID Card -- Twice, even with a different brand. Exact problem still exists.

So what could be the problem? Could it be the cables? Could it be whatever hardware exists inside the hdd bay itself?

Any ideas on where to start? I'd rather not throw away a $250 hdd bay if I can fix this problem...

Have you checked for a firmware update?
Ensured that the drives are on their compatible list?
Contacted Sans Digital for assistance?
