Either one is a good choice. CPU temps on both using any one of those coolers are within 1-2 degrees celsius of each other. I would prefer the U12S because of its smaller dimensions and quieter operation.

thats a good point. the slightly better cooling isnt really worth it for the size. it is so heave id be afraid to put it on my MOBO. really anything noctura is top notch though and you cant go wrong.

So is there any difference between

Noctua NH-U14S

and
Noctua NH-U12S

Or are they both roughly the same thing?

The difference is in the size. The U14s = supports 140 mm fans while U12S = supports 120 mm fans.

performance wise not much. i believe the 14 has a bigger fan. and is a newer design

The U14S also is taller so it has to fitt in your case.
