Hi!

I have bought an F&D 6000 5.1 surround system (http://www.fendaaudio.com/51_speakers/f6000.html).

My motherboard is Digilite G41MXE (http://smartlink.co.in/pDetails.aspx...D=15&PRODID=67). I am doubtful if my motherboard supports 5.1.

Should I buy a sound card? If yes, should I get an internal or external sound card? It would be great if you could please suggest the best ones.

Many thanks in advance!

Solution
Your motherboard specs claim to have "6 channel High Definition Audio by Realtek IC." So the issue is how to make the connection. The best possible one will be if the mobo has digital output and the system has digital input. This offloads the digital to analog conversion to something that was designed with the sound as the primary concern (well, in theory).

Hmm. The specs for the surround system say "Audio input cable: white/red RCA vs. RCA stereo cable ×3pcs." So it looks like it doesn't have digital input, which is a shame. The mobo has 3x mini stereo connectors, so you connect those.

Hi, WyomingKnott

Thank you kindly for your quick response! I am sorry I have bit of a difficulty in understanding your response as I do not have technical knowledge on PCs. Please forgive my ignorance. Could you please guide me if I should buy a sound card to connect F&D F 6000 to my motherboard? I do not know which one to choose. Thanks very much for your patience!

You should be able to connect the sound system to your pc without a sound card if you want to try it, with three of something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882021057 (not an endorsement of that product).

There are three plugs on the back of your machine for the smaller side of that cable; they are at the right of the back-panel connectors and colored blue, green, and red. Each of them will connect to two of the six RCA jacks ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rca_jack ) for input to the surround system. I suspect that you will need someone to help you; I don't know the mapping of which cords will connect to what.

This should give you sound. I have no idea what the quality will be; you can probably get better sound with a dedicated sound card but why not try the free solution first?

Check out this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1796784/true-surround-sound.html . Not your system, but the same idea.

Wow. That was quick, WyomingKnott. Thank you for your efforts! I will try the RCA cable. I referred to the thread you suggested. If I desire a better sound output, which sound card would you suggest?

Well, that's a very personal decision. The one I use is of no help to you; it only has stereo output. I got it because of its superior headphone output.

I suggest that you first connect the soundsystem and see if it sounds good to you. I have read that the onboard codecs are pretty good these days. If not, start a new thread with something like "I have this soundsystem and that motherboard and the on-board sound is not that good. What sound card should I try?"

Also, run through the manual and back panel of the surround system and see if I was wrong and it does accept digital input. That would probably be your best quality without significantly increasing your price.

Perhaps one of these http://www.asus.com/us/Sound_Cards_and_DigitaltoAnalog_Converters/Xonar_Essence_ST/ and one of these http://www.asus.com/us/Sound_Cards_and_DigitaltoAnalog_Converters/Xonar_H6/ ? But I'm prejudiced, since I use the Xonar Essence STX: http://www.asus.com/us/Sound_Cards_and_DigitaltoAnalog_Converters/Xonar_Essence_STX/ .
