Hi all,

I've been trying to connect to the Internet from my work for the past year and it's been very flaky. When I first installed our service, it would connect without a problem, but when I would leave for work and return the next day, it would be unable to connect. I have to restart the modem/router combo for it to connect again, which I cannot do during store hours because our cash register system is linked to the network.

My laptop connects to every network except the one at work. The network here at work connects to every device except my laptop. I've replaced the modem/router with a new one and still have problems, meaning I don't think the problem is coming from the modem/router itself, unless it's a setting that I've missed. Below are my specs:

- Laptop model: Inspiron 15z
- Router/Modem combo: Netgear 7550
- OS: Windows 8.1
- ISP and Internet Connection Type: ATT DSL
- Number of Devices: 6 or 7

Please help! Thank you.

If you connect to it but have no internet access try this:
Just to simply get a Ethernet cable and plug it in to the router at the back for about 10 seconds and then unplug it again.
This should then reset your ip address.

Thank you for your response. I forgot to mention that I still cannot connect to the internet when I plug the ethernet cable in. I can direct to the modem settings through the 192.168 gateway, but it does not connect to the internet.

I cannot connect to it at all, similar to having the incorrect password.

You may want to consider manually setting up the IP address and DNS settings for your router.
Try this:
Go to "Control Panel"
Then Click "Network and Internet"
Then go to "Network and sharing center"
On the left panel you should see "Change adapter settings"
After clicking that it should open a windows called "Network connections"
Select your device and right clicking on it, then select "Properties"
under "This connection uses the following items:"
Search for "Internet Protocol version 4"
And click "Properties" for it
Now click "Use the following IP address" and "Use the following DNS addresses"
Now for IP address: type this in "192.168.0.19"
For subnet mask: 225.225.225.0
For the default gateway type this: 192.168.0.1

For DNS type: 192.168.0.1
And for the second one 192.168.0.4

*Please note depending on your country and provider it may be 192.168.1.1
You can check this by visiting your routers homepage by type in either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

Use the one that's right and change all the above points.

Will this mess up any IP settings for when I move to another wireless network?

I tried this, but still did not get connected. I tried using 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask, (I assume it was not supposed to be 225.225.225.0), and tried 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.254 (the latter is the IP for router settings) and it still did not work.

When I called tech support, they said that there is something on my computer that is preventing me from connecting to the Internet. I'm wondering if I should format my laptop and start new, but I really don't think that will help. It seems to be some sort of network security setting either on my laptop or in the router settings.

I bought a new HP Pavilion 3 weeks ago with 8.1 installed. It worked great until the recent MS update on 5/15/14. I was fine until seemingly out of the blue 5/27/14, I found I was connected to my wireless but not the internet.

I tried a dozen solutions, nothing worked.

I went into my recent updates and after reading an article about issues with some of them that MS mandated by done before June, found they pushed that out due to some updates causing other problems, but no mention of this particular repercussion.

However, I decided to try to uninstall the one they say was a big problem, KB2919355. but make sue to also change the setting to UPDATE AUTOMATICALLY, say NO, you choose when to update. If you don't, when you restart to remove the update, it will try to update it again. It did that to me, and once it updated 2919355 and restarted, it lost the connection again, and couldn't finish. Really annoying, but once I finally got in, I HAD MY INTERNET BACK!

There's no way will I allow this update to run until I see that the issue is resolved.
