Hi There,

A very good morning / evening

I am having a serious issue with my WD External HDD and hoping your team will help me resolve it.

I was downloading a movie and next day morning when I saw, it stopped with an error "Former Volume not mounted"

I checked under Disk Management - It shows the disk as unallocated

It shows as Disk 1 – 465.74 GB Not Initialized

When I right click the only options that I get is Offline and Properties

I have checked this disk on Windows XP and Windows 7, it is the same result

Below are the details you may want

External HDD Make - Western Digital
Size - 500G
P/N - WDBAAA5000ABK-00
Connection - USB

I tried uninstalling the disk form Device Manager and installing it again, but that did not help either

Also the space on the drive was close to being completely utilized, I had only 10 GB out of 500GB space left in it, but I don’t think that should pose as a problem

It sounds like while downloading.. either your USB port or the HDD went to sleep in the middle.. same as if your computer turns off while windows is running, it can corrupt the HDD.

In order to get it back you will most likely have to recover and reformat.

Check this out http://www.piriform.com/recuva

this happens alot with external HDDs.. if unplugging and plugging back in didn't help then you may want to also go to disk managment and see what it says from there.. Also if the external has only one partition and (being external probably not) not in a RAID then you should think about re-formatting it as a Basic Volume.

=\
