Hi all,

I'm looking at the possibility of building a gaming PC after recently acquiring a Intel i5-2400 CPU for free as an alternative to buying a next green console.

I currently have a budget of £200 to spend on additional components, but I'm in no hurry to build it right away so I can save and buy when more budget is available.

So, first things first, is the i5-2400 still capable of keeping up with today's games?

Secondly, I need to source a mobo, case, PSU and RAM. What are my options here?

I also want it to run as quiet, if not quieter than say an Xbox 360, what would I need to look for to achieve this?

I'll be using it as a HTPC/Gaming PC, as it'll be connected to my living room tv via HDMI. Therefore keyboard and mouse are out of the question, I already have a Xbox 360 wireless receiver and controllers, how well supported are controllers in the latest games?

Hi,
2400 is almost the same as the 2500 with the difference that the 2500 is 300 MHz more clocked. When the 2500 can handle novadays games the 2400 will do it too. They are both socket 1155 so you just need a 1155 socket motherboard. RAM around 4GB+ and for PSU something from XFX, Seasonic. For case you said you will be using it as a HTPC. Do you want it to be HTPC case or normal mITX case? Thats what i would get :

Motherboard: ASRock H77M-ITX Mini ITX LGA1155 Motherboard (£69.63 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Kingston Black Series 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£28.92 @ Ebuyer)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card (£239.72 @ Scan.co.uk)
Case: BitFenix Prodigy (Black) Mini ITX Tower Case (£64.25 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: XFX ProSeries 450W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply (£34.14 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £436.66

£ 30 over, but a lot of better performance.

Thanks for the response, how long should I expect the i5-2400 to last in terms of gaming capability.

Would that build you suggested be capable of 1080p gaming, and be competitive In performance if not better than the next gen consoles?

You should be able to max out fast everygame of 1080p and the good thing is that the 2400 wont bottleneck the 770. Also your CPU is solid but around 2 years it may least. If you are looking to upgrade the CPU just go for the 3570K :) Also that config i listed will kill the next generation consoles :) Have fun building it!
