Looking for upgrade over XFX 7850 2GB card

Hey everyone,

This is my first time posting here. I have been reading through a lot of posts via Google to try and find the right card for my system. I thought it would be a better idea to make a post because there are so many different GPU brands I have a hard time figuring out which one to get.

Right now I am looking at picking up a GTX 780 but I am not sure which brand to go with. For me it comes down to noise level, cooling(if I don't have enough) and obviously a more powerful card. I want to find a good balance between those 3 attributes. Other suggestions are welcome except for SLI/Crossfire because the game I am using as an example(ESO) does not support it. Now onto my system:

CPU: i5-2500K OC'd to 4.4GHZ
MB: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
PSU: PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W
RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600
CPU Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Heatsink
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB OC'd to 1050MHZ (if i can recall correctly)
Case: Zalman Z9 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case

Now I believe the maximum length for the GPU will be 290mm(apologies US citizens, Canadian here). So that will be a limitation. Right now I am getting an average of 60fps in Elder Scrolls Online 1080p with everything turned up except shadows and water reflections(they kill my fps). I would like to run this game at ultra high settings with an average framerate of above 60fps(basically as little frame drops as possible).

As far as a budget I really don't want to spend more than $400-450 unless it is really worth it in performance. So I am willing to go over a little bit for the right card.

Solution
If you can afford the ASUS GTX 780 DCUII http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DWV3NM6 then definitely grab one.

It's an amazing card and will last you quite a while. I love my R9 280X but if I had to do it all over again and the money to do so, I'd try out the GTX 780. It's quite the card from what I've heard.

Thank you very much for the response. Yes, the 280x is well within my budget and is a significant upgrade over my 7850. However after looking at reviews of the MSI make, it seems like quite a few people have been having trouble with the fans leaking oil. I'm not sure if this is due to bitcoin mining or a bad overclock or what.

Well, my personal favorite is the ASUS R9 280X DCUII http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FT2S4BG and is the model I'm currently using.

It's voltage unlocked and can overclock quite high. The DCUII cooler is very silent also. I just linked the MSI because of their reputation and the price but the ASUS is always my favorite.

Hey man, thanks again for your response. I am just looking at the size of that card and its going to be a really snug fit in my case. Maybe too snug. I have been looking at the EVGA GTX 770 4GB because I might want to use SLI in the future. I'm not interested in it yet because ESO does not support it yet. But another thing is, I'm not sure I can justify spending $100 on an extra 2GB of VRAM. So I am really in a pickle on what to do here.

The 4GB 770 is pointless since the bandwidth of the 770 can't even utilize 4GB VRAM. The R9 280X is actually a better option but the 2GB 770 should suffice if you want to go that route.

Yeah I have been doing some research and I don't think I want to go with the 4GB anyways. The performance is identical when SLIing them and my PSU probably wouldn't support it anyways. I think I want to future-proof a bit and go with either a R9 280X or a GTX 780 because they have 3GB of RAM and I know I will want to be bumping my resolution up to 1440p in a year or so. It's a tough choice. The 770/270X for it's price point is excellent performance for 1080p gaming. But I don't know how long it will be until I need to upgrade. Which makes me lean towards the 780/280X.

Have you given any thought to the r9 290? It performs far better than the 280x, about the same as the 780. It has 4gb of VRAM and can fully utilize it with its 512 bit memory bus, which is twice as big as the GTX 770.Plus since it has 4gb of VRAM, it can play games in 4k with med-high settings. Pop anither one in for crossfire and you will be able to max out 4k games at 60 fps. As for 1080p, one of these will easily max out any game.

Unfortunately, the R9 290's run hot even with the aftermarket coolers and driver support is generally better with nVidia (coming from someone who is using AMD right now). If you're only gaming at 1440p or less then 4GB VRAM serves no purpose.

Yes I think I will be going with the 780. It's a bit overkill for 1080p gaming but down the line when I want to go 1440p, grab a new PSU, monitor, and another 780. Other than maybe The Witcher 3 which is supposed to set the new standard for graphics. GTX 780 SLI runs Metro: LL at over 60fps on average at 1440p with high quality settings. Company of Heroes 2 runs at 30fps average at 1440p w/ Max setting + Med AA. But I don't really play that game so I am not really worried about it. Although it's funny that the 290 outperforms the 280 SLI in certain situations, but overall the 280 SLI outperforms the 290 quite a bit. But right now for me the 290 is really overkill. A single 780 makes more sense to me right now and it leaves me an option to upgrade. Thanks a lot for your help!
