I recently overclocked my MSI R9 270 gaming edition. My core increase was 16.5% , 955 to 1110, and my memory increase was 7.25%, 1400 to 1500. My first heaven reading at baseline was 26.15 avg fps, 12.65 min fps and 56.95 for max fps. My last heaven reading after overclock was 29.55 avg fps, 11.65 min fps and 64.25 max fps. I calibrated heaven to ultra quality, extreme tess, direct3d11, 1920x1080 mode and 8x AA for both tests. I feel disappointed that the fps increase was so minimal. Is anyone having the same experience? Any OC advice would be appreciated. My system is using a fx 6300 oc to 4.3ghz with 8 gig ram.

Hi and welcome to Tom's forum.

What about the performance gain in games? Do you see a big performance increase?

Thanks saint19 for the warm welcome!

I tested the benchmarks of two games. Tomb Raider (2013) and Batman: Arkham City. For Tomb Raider, the minimum fps were 48, the max fps 76 and the avg was 61.4 at the setting of 955 core and 1400 memory. When the gpu was oc to 1110 core and 1500 memory the scores were: min 54, max 87.5 and avg 69.8. For Batman: Arkham City the minimum fps were 72, max 172 and avg 120 at the setting of 955 core and 1400 memory. When the gpu was oc to 1110 core and 1500 memory the scores were: min 72, max 188 and avg 138.

The Tomb Raider scores were under 1-2 frames of the 16.5% increase. Scores from Batman: Arkham City were not even close to the 16.5% increase with the exception of the avg which was only 2 frames shy. Does this appear as a large performance increase in both games in your opinion?

If you want to know the games settings, just let me know. I just didn't want to go through the effort of typing it out if it was not necessary.

Well. You sped up the card by about 16% and you got around a 16% increase in fps. The average is where you will see the improvement. So batman performance is on par with what I would expect.

For a 16% overclock you get around 16% more fps.

I don't think that would be a noticeable change. But it is an improvement none the less.

Seems a good increase in performance but I want to ask you, What performance increaso would you wait for that overclock?

I'm not really sure what I expected because I have never overclocked a gpu before this. I'm not familiar with what an average or "good" overclock is in gpu standards. The research I have done has yielded very little information online from other people with the same card so I don't have much to base my conclusion on.

That's a good overclock for a GPU with stock cooler. Remember that not all the components overclock the same, even, when they are from the same model.

Did you change voltage for those frequencies?

I did not change the voltage on the gpu to achieve that overclock saint19. I didn't know what to increase it by and if it was bad for the gpu or not. I'm a little more hesitant with my gpu than cpu when it comes to overclocking because of the price. lol.

Then, that's an excellent overclock because you did it at stock voltage.

Change or rise voltage doesn't have anything different to change frequencies, the only difference is that you will see the GPU's heat rise a little more than normal. Try rising the voltage a little, 10-15mv on Afterburner and rise a little more the frequency. Test for stability and let us know the results.
