My cpu is considerably behind my 280x, and read that mantle can help in situations like this so decided to take a punt. The card is only a week old but running well.

I downloaded the latest beta drivers from AMD's website, and followed instructions to uninstall the current AMD bundle, restart and install the new driver. No problem.

Windows wouldn't load though, just stuck on the windows loading screen (I waited around 10 minutes).
-Tried in safe mode - same issue.
-Tried startup repair but after an hour it was still scanning so abandoned that
-Tried a restore but again all it did was scan and scan, never brought up the menu

Eventually putting in the windows CD repaired it, and it loaded fine with no graphics drivers. So I tried once more .. same issue.

This time round I installed the original drivers, and about half way in it said there was an error installing a certain module, but it did complete. Now everything loads with the drivers installed but the windows screen takes a bit longer (maybe 2 minutes instead of 30 seconds).

Any ideas on why the beta driver didn't work and secondly what's happening with all this slow loading now?

You have to completely uninstall previous amd video drivers before installing beta drivers. Try using the AMD Clean Uninstall Utillity (on their website) and reinstall beta drivers. Also when Beta drivers are installed, disable any integrated graphics in device manager.

Hmm really? The website said to just remove through program manager!

You reckon it's as simple as that?

I understand that but sometimes just doing that doesn't clear the registry entries from previous installations. I also prefer to use atiman to uninstall drivers but its up to you.

Ok fair enough, certainly logical. I'll give it a whirl when I have a bit of free time and report back.

Thanks for the input fella.

Tried again. Used the clean uninstall tool. Even rebooted in safe mood and used driver cleaner.

Installed new beta drivers. Was stuck on the windows loading screen for ten mins before I gave up and decided it wasn't working. Interestingly in safe mode (with the new driver) it stops on 'avgidsha.sys' which I believe is AVG. A coincidence or more?

Start up repair failed, but through the windows CD I managed to get a restore done, so with the clean uninstall tool ran again I installed the old drivers fine.

Feeling a bit frustrated to be honest!

yes, you'd think that AMD would be able to completely uninstall their own drivers, but no, you have to use another programme someone wrote to do that.

But second time round I used AMD Clean install utility and then driver sweeper too. No joy!

But when I install the beta driver windows doesn't even boot, never mind allow me to select the API in BF4!

I could try certainly, the sides off so it's a 60 second job. Surely if there was issue with seating the regular drivers wouldn't work fine though?

this stuff kind of has a mind of its own and if the other card worked fine its best just to get things out of the way

I never tried the older card with the beta drivers. Both cards worked fine on their respective drivers.

Like I said I'm happy to try this evening though.

well i would bet there are no beta drivers for a 4000 series card but if the 280x works fine with the regular drivers try going back a version in the betas to 14.2

I doubt it too, just trying to be complete :)

That's not a bad shout, I'll have a look for the 14.2 beta drivers this evening thanks.

So this is fixed. Long story short ... after trying EVERYTHING (including multiple failed windows restores but no BSOD) I changed my SATA controller to Native IDE. Windows ran a chkdsk then loaded fine.

No viruses, no reason why but it loaded with the new drivers installed.
