Hello everyone, need your expertise. I am looking for used 32-64 GB RAM server preferably 1-2 U or tower, Dell or Supermicro, main priority is noise level, since its going to be home server.
Price range, I saw there are many servers with 32GB RAM in range $200-400, not sure which one sould be the most quiet one.

Thank you.

Servers aren't known for being very quiet as they are normally in a room or closet where it doesn't really matter.

I understand that, still there is big difference in noise level across different servers. I am trying to avoid loudest ones.

I would look at a tower over a 1 or 2 U rack. With the tower there is more airflow and most of the time less fans. With a 1 or 2 U since the space is smaller there are usually more fans to increase the airflow through out the case.

Tower may be your best bet or chance of getting something that runs quieter. I've got a couple HP DL360e G8 servers that are just 1U but they are whisper quiet nearly, running about as loud as my desktop system with a Corsair H80 liquid cooling system. However, you're not going to find the newer Gen8 server systems used, especially down at that price point. The older generation servers were louder (even the DL385 G7 that we have installed at a couple of other offices are noticeably louder than the DL360e G8 that I have.) However, at least with tower servers even if the stock fans or CPU coolers that come with it aren't as quiet as you'd like, you may have the ability to replace them with after-market CPU coolers or fans that would run quieter.

If you take 1U/2U , it won't be quiet.

On your place, I would consider HP MicroSvr Gen8 G2020T - it's very quiet.
