Verizon Home DSL DNS Unstable

At least every day my home internet will freeze up completely and the windows troubleshooter will come back with DNS server unavailable. Once this happens no new web pages or network using applications can be used although sometimes a Skype call that is in progress will continue without fail while nothing else will work. The only remedy I have been able to use is the classsic Turn if Off and On again for my modem/router which is a DLINK model DSL 2750B

This has been going on for years and I finally mustered up the willpower to post the issue here.

If the modem allows you to set custom dns set it to google's dns servers at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

I tried that, no effect. Same error occurs about every day. Thanks for the advice though. Any other options?

might to check to see if there is QoS settings to make sure it is not allocating all of your bandwidth to skype. Also what is your connection speeds with your ISP?

Nope, QoS is default, the speed of our plan (the highest they offer out here) is 3 mbps down and 0.9 up yet more than half of the time it is less than half of both.

If that is the case that it is either the router or the service. You can buy (or even better test a friend's) different modem/router to see if it is any better.

Try setting the DNS settings on your computer to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 Then you won't be using your modem, but directly going to those DNS servers, assuming something else isn't going on. Let us know if that works.
