I just built a new budget gaming computer with a Radeon HD 7770. It never gets even close to being hot, and it seems like it was meant to be overclocked. I installed MSI Afterburner and tried to overclock it. I changed core clock from 1000 to 1200 and memory clock from 1125 to 1500. I did not change power limit as I do not know what to change it to. As soon as I opened a game, the computer crashed and restarted.

1)What do I need to change power limit to?
2)Did I choose core or memory clock speeds that are too high?
3) I left fan speed or auto, is that ok?

Please help me figure this out, I feel like I am not using my card to its full potential.

1. i'd say max it out if you're trying to aim for the highest overclock possible.

2. most likely yes. system crashing while overclocking anything generally means instability.

3. you'll probably want to set a custom fan profile in Afterburner.

just do a google search for "hd 7770 overclock guide" or something along those lines. find out what the safe operating temperatures are so you prevent thermal throttling (where the video card starts to slow down due to high temperatures).

Thanks! I was able to overclock it a little bit. Now I get 52 FPS in Blacklight instead of 45. Another question:
I know overclocking decreases the life span of the graphics card, but does it decrease significantly? I plan to keep this card for at least two years, should I be worried?

as long as you don't increase the GPUs voltage, you shouldn't need to worry too much.

all you need to worry about is just keeping your temperatures in check and make sure they're not exceedingly high; if the temperatures are fine, it's smooth sailing :)
