I've not done ANY overclocking with my 2600k but somehow it is running at 3.8 ghz? (3.4ghz stock) i'm worried because of temperatures as i don't have the best cpu cooler at the moment.

More about : 2600k

Would that be the auto turbo boost that is built into the card.

3.8 is the turbo boost speed.

Anytime it thinks it might have a load coming up it will turbo. I don't know what the algorithm looks like exactly, but it is perfectly normal and healthy.

Might be because of 4 programs heres an explanation
manofchalk is correct. Though i would just add that turbo speeds are not sustained for prolonged periods to ensure long cpu life.

for e.g. i have a core i5 2400 cpu. It is rated to run at 3.1 GHz. However, if I am performing too many tasks at the same time, Intel turbo boost will increase the cpu speed on one core (its a quad-core cpu) to 3.4 GHz. This speed is sustained for only 1 second through BIOS default.

In that 1 second speed burst though, the processor completes far many things. Also, turbo boost becomes slower as more cores are involved. Different programs can use different number of cores depending on their coding.
for my processor, single core turbo - 3.4
2 core - 3.3, 3 cores - 3.3 and 4 cores is 3.2 GHz maximum

so a heavy program which can use only one core will see maximum turbo speed of 3.4GHz and another which can use all for cores will see maximum turbo of 3.2 GHZ

it's a lengthy explanation but is probably what you were looking for

I7 2600K has a feature called Turbo Boost. It is ON by default. Your CPU will boost its frequency if it is under a certain temperature:
1 Core loaded - 3.8 GHz
2 Cores loaded - 3.7 GHz
3 Cores loaded - 3.6 GHz
4 Cores loaded - 3.5 GHz

Turbo boost is turned down by 2 ways - CPU reaches certain temperature or after a set amount of time. It is a nice little extra speed and there is nothing to worry about. It is well withing specifications by Intel. If you don't like it, you can always turn it OFF in the BIOS. Cheers and good luck.

I know what it was, i was playing around with prime95 earlier and forgot to stop it. Sorry about that :)
