Network connectivity problems

I have limited knowledge about networking and I have a question concerning my current issue, and that my router (ASUS N16) and my current antivirus software both of them provide firewalls. The antivirus monitors outbound and inbound where as to the best of my knowledge the router only monitors inbound. When I'm connect via directly connected from my Ethernet from my modem into my computer my internet is very stable and it doesn't bounce. When I am connected through the router into my computer my internet is very spotty and bounces quite often. But when I am off of my desktop and not using the internet their the internet seems to be stable again. Could their be a confliction between the two firewalls and the network protection services that are running simultaneously? Or is one software and the other is hardware? I have already ruled out my ISP due to having them come out check my wiring and connections and the poles outside and I had them replace my modem. If suggestions would help alot thanks!

Solution
it could be. sounds software to me based on what you said. i would say turn off your firewall on either one see if that fixes the problem, then swap and turn off the other and turn on the other, then let us know your findings.

I am currently trying this solution now my main concern is that will this make my router exploitable due to not having the router's firewall and network protection up. It is password protected but firmware is very easy to exploit.

as long as you aren't some criminal mastermind (im sure you aren't or you wouldn't be asking these questions) no one will mess with you in the few hours its going to take you to do all this. on top of all that you are keeping your computer monitored so things should be fine.
