Yup, you can install Windows 8 on your computer. However, you may want to find your ethernet or wireless drivers before you reinstall, just in case you need them to connect to the internet to be able to install the rest of the drivers. You can find the LAN driver here, under the "Support & Download" Tab.

Also, you cannot "upgrade" from a 32-bit installation of Windows XP. You'll need to do a clean install (which is recommended anyway).

I hope that helps!

Is the above report about the PC that you plan to install Windows 8 on? If so, you will need at least 2 GB of RAM for the new OS.

While you could try to find a RAM stick to pair with your existing memory, it might save you some headache to just buy some new RAM altogether (you have to ensure compatibility, or you may not be able to use your new RAM).

Take a look at this RAM. You should feel a nice performance boost from this upgrade, as this faster RAM frees you from using the slow page file and allows you to take advantage of dual channel memory.

Also, if I wasn't clear, you should back up the LAN driver from the page I linked onto your External hard drive. Just in case you haven't already done that.

Let me know if you have any questions!
