Hi Forum,

I recently bought a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler to replace my stock Intel one after finishing my first self built PC. However I feel as though it is under performing. The temperatures of my cores all idle at 40c minimum (sometimes 39c) and even as I type this, using HWMonitor they are all at 50c, 50c, 50c and 49c - with only two Google Chrome tabs open.

My set up is as follows:

Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2
Mobo: Gigabyte x58a-ud3r
CPU: Intel i7 950 with Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Cooler
RAM: 10gb Corsair XMS 3 (2x3, one of them is bad so should be 12gb)
GPU: Geforce GTX 460
PSU: Antec 620w High Current Gamer

Crucial M500 240gb
Seagate Barracuda 500gb
Western Digital Green Caviar 2tb

I've tried lots of resolutions but none have helped. Here is what I have tried:

Reseating the entire unit x 2.
Using a pea sized drop of thermal paste in the centre.
Turning the fan speed up to 100% (1600rpm) from the current 1200rpm (by disabling the smart fan in the BIOS).
The above in conjunction with running all 3 of my case fans (1 front intake, 2 exhaust) at 100%.
Removing top panel filter to increase airflow.

I have another 140mm Fractal Design Silent Series fan on the way from Amazon to have as a 2nd intake or 3rd exhaust (depending on which yields better results)

Could anyone shed some light into my problem?

I will attach a photo of my case set up for airflow reference. If any other information or pictures are needed then please just ask.

You've tried all the obvious fixes already. Your case should have no problems with ventilation and personally I've found the 212 cooler to be excellent.

Possibilities are;

The heat spreader on your CPU has a very bad interface to the silicon - but is it soldered on the I7-950? I'm not sure

Your cooler has a manufacturing defect, perhaps one of the heat pipe leaked or the base is not flat

Your CPU is not flat

There is still an installation issue - does it move easily when fixed in place?

Do you have a stock cooler? Try that.

I know it's been a while since you posted this but it doesn't look like you've found a solution. I just had a similar problem and after much hair pulling I discovered that the center thumbscrew for the hold down is actually adjustable. This is not mentioned in any of the online installation tutorials I've seen nor is it included in the instructions that came with my unit. It certainly affects the mounting pressure which in turn affects heat dissipation and it cured my problem, at least so far. Good luck.
