should I be worried about static?

I was opening and inspecting my motherboard but I didn't know about the electro static discharge thing. I am worried, because I do not have a case (didn't buy one yet) and I didn't touch any grounded metal before touching the board.
Will my motherboard still work? I do not have any carpets in my house and I am always barefoot, if that matters. I do not regularly get shocked around the house so the static isn't very common here.

Will my motherboard still work? The 2nd time, before taking it out, I touched the metal legs on my computer table. Will this be sufficient?

You are good, unless you see/feel an actual shock you are fine.
Barefoot no carpet is a good place to be as well, when you get the case just brush your wrist against it while working and there will be no issues at all.
I live in a fairly dry part of cali, in a drought, with carpet and hard wood in various places, and lots of dust, never had an issue.

Sounds like you have nothing to worry about. When installing the hardware, it is a good idea to buy a $4 anti static wrist strap though for peace of mind. Not having carpets and barefoot should also give peace of mind.
