Need To Update Windows XP Before The End

I have an old PC that I don't use much anymore that I want to update the XP service packs and security updates before it ends after the 8th. I haven't updated XP in several years, still have service pack 2.

But I hear there may be some problems. Rumors are Microsoft slipped in some adware and spyware on recent XP critical updates. Then there is that service pack 3 update that prompts you to register your copy of windows. I don't want. I bought the PC many years ago new, with XP preloaded. I didn't come with a physical copy. I'm not sure If this means Windows XP was already registered at purchase, but since it's several years old, and I didn't register myself, I'm sure the code has been used several times.

I need to know what security updates, and service packs to op out of when I update the old PC. Which ones to avoid.

Also is there somewhere safe to obtain these updates after the 8th?

Thanks for any help.

if you bought it new and didn't give out the xp code then there's no reason to believe its been used several times (as you stated) and I wouldn't worry about failing activation/genuine advantage.

As for what to install or not to install, if you tell update to let you chose what to install it will give you a checkoff list which you can write down the numbers to research. the only safe place to obtain updates in Microsoft, not that xp is considered very safe anymore anyways.

your best bet is to update everything it will give you. I've never heard of MS incorporating spyware.
Hackers aren't dumb. even tho XP makes up a very small portion of computers these days, they know any exploits not patched are not going to ever be patched. So they've shifted their target BACK onto XP.

For as cheap as computers are these days... where you can get a usuable laptop or desktop for $300 with win 7 on it, I'd seriously reccomend doing that. Not only will it be likely 10x faster than what you have, you also dont want to be susceptible

Just install every update in my opinion, no need to exclude the service pack 3 due to rumors. First off they would never install adware.

+XP is used by roughly 500million people around the world.

I am conducting a experiment on Windows XP's NT rock-solid durability. My plan is to install XP, install antivirus, connect to the Internet, install general programs, then attempt to infect the computer with malware. The results that come up, I will write a email to Microsoft. I hope that Microsoft recontinues Windows XP support. Thanks for being concerned about Windows XP!

So this is true Microsoft will not remove security updates, and XP service packs from windows update, or the website?

I wonder if the still have 2000 update listed for download.

There are no guarantees as to just how long they will leave the update servers up. They shut down the 9x, ME, 2000 update servers about 3 years ago.

When did Microsoft end support of 9x and 2000? I don't remember but it was several years ago.

Isn't there a legit site that has SP3 and the updates that follow, available for download? I though I was reading about that somewhere on this forum. I would like to burn these updates to a disc.

When you get the SP3 download, keep it in your PC but also slipstream it with your XP installation disk to make a new bootable CD which incorporates the Service Pack. There's more information on doing that at Paul Thurrot's WinSupersite here http://winsupersite.com/windows-xp/slipstreaming-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3

I suspect the adware referred to above was down to the Security Essentials nagging popup which curiously appeared only on XP systems after a so-called upgrade. That "upgrade" makes no difference to Windows 7 or even to Vista so it was presumably included to persuade XP owners to buy something more expensive.

A Microsoft official said they have no plans to remove them in a recent ZDNet interview. As for 98 SE they discontinued support in 2006. Windows Update stopped supporting it with the old patches around 2010 (so they were up for years afterward). Given the tiny marketshare 98 SE had at the time support was ended vs. the huge marketshare XP has I don't think they are going to remove them anytime soon.
