Will overclocking my cpu help me out with FPS?

So I have a pretty solid rig, AMD radeon r9 290 gpu, with i7 4770k, my motherboard is the asus z87-k atx, have a good power supply and pretty good cooling (120mm liquid cooling with some basic fans) and 8gb of ram. I play a lot of DayZ standalone, a game which I hear is rather CPU intensive, and get about 30-45 frames on slightly above average settings, as low as 20 in cities. I have never overclocked before, and was wondering if, if I were to overclock (either my CPU or GPU) would there be much of an improvement? If so, how much?

Its all dependent on what game you are running. OCing the GPU will give some FPS increase for definate (again depends on the Game and how much of an OC you do). Do overclock that CPU (it a K so not doing is a waste) You MAY see some improvement on heavy CPU games but the rest of your system will run faster also with a CPU OC. As with any overclock do it bit by bit and test each time. Monitor thermals and dont go crazy with the voltages (check manufacturer for recommended maximum voltages). OC ability is chip dependent 1 identical chip may not OC as well as another.

Thanks you for the answer. I'll definitely look into overclocking, particularly my CPU. One other question (since you seem to know damn well what you're talking about :p  ), if I were to overclock, would it greatly shorten the lifespan of either the GPU or the CPU? If so, do you have any idea by how much? I don't plan on going super overboard with it.

Heat is the only thing that will noticeably shorten the cpu's lifespan.
My dad is an electrical engineer in the semiconductor/transistor field and in their many tests they have done they have seen every 12-13c increase in temps halves the parts lifespan.
Realistically the components will probably go obsolete before they would ever wear out, but nothing is guaranteed when overclocking
