Hi everyone,
My Grandson is having problems with an i7 processor as we used the wrong material to clean it after it was touched, we've been advised to use Alcohol to remove the potentially contaminated thermal paste and to clean the processor but I cannot get pure alcohol so will Boots surgical spirit do? contents are ethanol 90% methanol 5% other ingrediants- methyl salicylate, diethyl phinalate, castor oii? would appreciate your guidance, dont want to make the same mistake twice.

It is usually best to get an Alcohol without any oils, but that would work as well. I use something similar for cleaning (it also has 5% oil of some kind) and there are no problems whatsoever. When you reapply the thermal paste, make sure you either apply a small amount and then spread it in a near see-through layer with a business card or something similar or just use a bit smaller than pea sized blob in the middle and press the cooler. At the moment when you press the heatsink to the CPU, do not lift it afterwards, as it may create air bubbles. Cheers and good luck.

Thanks for the tips, Dudes Grandma is in town so will wait to see if she has any luck getting the pure stuff and then fingers crossed. The new machine hes built has never run on startup the processor cooling fan runs 15-17seconds turns off for 5 then reboots runs 15 sec etc so this is our start point for trouble shooting
