For movies with a you will need to select spdif pass through in your media player settings.
For games you will need a sound card that converts the audio to digital, i have a Asus Xonar DSX 7.1 PCI Express 1.0 Sound Card.
This card will convert audio from games to dts on the fly and send it out of the optical port.
If your amp has phono in for front, surround and sub/centre then you can also use phono cables and do it that way by setting the 5.1 option in play back devices and sound drivers, don't select the spdif pass through in media player setting for this option.

Yes should be fine,
Or in media player classic
View in the menu > Options > Internal Filters > Transform Filters > double click "AC3" > select "SPDIF".
