Hi Everyone,

I have a bit of a problem and just wondering if anyone can help me out.

I've just finished building my budget gaming PC

Power Supply: 500 Watt
Motherboard: Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3
CPU: AMD FX 6300 Six Core CPU (turbo 4.1Ghz)
Memory: 8gb DDR3 1600mhz Corsair Vengeance Memory
Graphics Card: MSI R9 270 Gaming

My problem is that when i play a game for 15mins and slightly more my PC shuts down without warning and it won't turn back on until i put power cord out of the power supply and put it back in and it will do the same thing again after 15mins of playing a game so i just monitored from start up to 2mins before it shut down.

5Mins after start up.

Then 15Mins game play 2mins before it shut down.

So could someone help me out tell me why my PC is doing this please.

Thanks

The first thing I would think is that you've overclocked a little too high, or that your power supply isn't delivering enough power. Have you overclocked, and which 500w power supply do you have?

You can try underclocking, or you can try a very basic GPU with very low power consumption instead, so that you can test whether the power limits are an issue. From the screen shots, though, it seems like you haven't overclocked. So I would try the video card thing. Your card along will suck up to 226w: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/R9_270X_Gaming/22.html

Also, under load, your CPU consumes 162w: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/fx-8350-8320-6300-4300_8.html

Together, that's almost 400w. Then add in your RAM and everything else. You'll be getting close on some PSUs. Not necessarily the problem, but it's something to consider.

Hi Eggz Thanks for the reply.

The R9 270 Gaming Not X come pre over clocked but i have not over clocked it myself.
The power supply is very basic no brand on it as i was on a low budget so should i try a 750W power supply in it instead?.

Hmm. It's hard to say in that case. The PSU is certainly a consideration, and since it's the easiest to identify and test, I would certainly try to eliminate that possibility first. Do you have a basic video card around, or maybe a larger another PSU? Either decreasing the power intake of your computer or increasing the available power will help you tell whether power is the issue.

Try underclocking the GPU as much as you can to try and reduce power consumption. Or maybe you can change the max CPU load to around 70% in the windows power settings. See if you can play longer with those two things done.

Limiting the CPU usage is a good suggestion. Here is something that will help you do that. Even though the link doesn't tell you exactly what to do, step-by-step, you should be able to figure out what to look for and what to do based on reading it and looking at the pictures.

The options should be somewhere in control panel, under the "power options," which is under hardware and sound.

Since we are dealing with a suspected PSU deficiency, you can also try other ways to limit power. While you can "test" it by buying a new PSU, a more frugal thing to do is under clock both your CPU and GPU. Turn down your CPU's multiplier and voltage in the BOIS, and also use something like MSI afterburner to under clock your video card as much as possible. Once those are low, you will draw significantly less power. BF4 will clearly not run well, but that is fine for the test. You just want to see if your computer stay powered up during extensive play while you are under clocked. If it does, then you'll know that power was in fact your issue; otherwise, you'll likely need to keep digging.
