Microsoft scan ran, told me which programmes were compatible, but not if my trusty old desktop will work with windows 8 . I love my computer and Xp but haven't a CLUE what to try next, other than fork out for a new PC,seems to be what Microsoft are wanting! Any suggestions? ( total technophobe)

Windows 8 - no - not compatible as HP have not released any Windows 8 drivers for that model.

Windows 7 - yes - though you'll have to search around a bit for genuine, legal Windows 7 disc with unused licence & key since Microsoft snatched back all the remaining ones to force up sales of Windows 8.

Thanks so much,I love my trusty compaq, that's very knowledgable of you to know all that off the top so your head. I will get windows 7 and continue until they kill that off too!!!

Don't let Microsoft's tactics and plans force you to upgrade your OS my friend. There's plenty of support available on forums such as this one, long after Microsoft has abandoned a particular version. Heck, some even have a DOS forum!

Anyway, progress and upgrades do not always live up to the media hype, especially with us older guys who have used every Windows version since the early-nineties. Windows 7 was (and still is) highly regarded as almost perfect, but with Windows 8 Microsoft took it's eyes off the ball and decided to go for 100% touchscreen support - many hate it as a result because using as mouse with it is clunky - - and who the heck wants to use a touchscreen monitor on a desktop PC?

Very happy I found toms hardware.co.uk. Only place I found any sense, yip, think all the supercompanies just want money and don't show loyalty, I submitted a complaint to Microsoft, I'm turning into Victor Meldrew!! Yes,I'll be regularly checking in to the website for info,it's brill !! Thanks again
