Is this doable?

No sorry this is not,
You would have to use one card that supports "Dual Display" so the tv would be doing one thing and the other display would be doing something else.

I tried that with my Radeon 5770 but I cannot get it to work.It seems that media center interferes somehow.

Your graphics card supports up to 3 monitors so that's not a issue.
Check if windows is identifying it
Go to "Control panel"
"Appearance and personalisation"
then under display click "Adjust screen resolution"
Do you see two screens there?
If one of them is "Grayed out" then that hasn't been set yet.
Select the grayed out screen and select the resolution for the tv (Research the TV's native resolution) and then under "Multiple displays" select "Extend these displays"

Tried that. Got a desktop with icons on one and a desktop without icons on the other.

I apologize for the long delay, I have been on holiday.
If you have the exact same image on both monitors try this:
(Make sure you have all monitor directly plugged into the computer and not on a splitter box)
Then click the 1|2 monitor and under "multiple displays" click extend these displays
