Still using my ol' Phenom X4 945 for gaming...

Hello TH!

I have a Phenom x4 945 overclocked to 3.7 Ghz @ 1.45v, Gigabyte 990FX mobo as well as 2x R9 280x in Crossfire that I use for gaming. I know my CPU is holding me back but I managed to play through Assassins Creed 4 smoothly with shadows and DoF/fog turned down. Beat Skyrim twice with smooth gameplay too.

The rest of the games I play aren't really that CPU intensive and run fine on the Phenom. Some are indie games. Some examples of what I play:

- Civ 5
- Betrayer
- Miasmata
- Outlast
- Penumbra
- Mafia II
- Alpha Protocol
- Mark of the Ninja
- Ether One

However, I'm really digging the FX 8350. It looks so sexy...but I'm not really in a budgetary position to throw down around 200$ for a 10FPS increase. So my question is...will the FX series (8320/50) go down in price if I wait say, a year? Would it be wise to keep my old Phenom?

I also only have a TX850M so I'm not sure how that'll handle the FX series under full load. My current CPU is a 95w.

Any input greatly appreciated, thanks.

Actually, CIV 5 very CPU intensive. You will see an increase in performance from faster and more powerful CPUs.

The 8320 can be found for $152.

Oh I see, thanks for the prompt reply.

With games like Watch Dogs and Witcher 3 and (possibly) GTAV coming out for the PC soon, an upgrade might be inevitable, and you're right the 8320 would be a sound choice to OC it to 4.2-4.

Do you think a price drop on the Vishera chip is on the horizon though?

That's a great price. However after purchasing a new 990 mobo and 2x 280x for mining I cannot conjure up even that much for a quality CPU, short of alchemy or robbery.

You are right, Civ 5 is definitely CPU intensive. I'm getting around 40-45FPS in Civ5, I'm sure the 8320 would likely almost double FPS, but honestly I'm just happy to be getting 30+ FPS.

I also am unable to play any online games due to crappy rural internet, so that eliminates a bunch of CPU-eating games like BF4 and such.
