GTX 770.

Both AMDs and Nvidia's newest GPUs will partially support DirectX 12.

The GeForce 770 or the GeForce 780 are your closest competitors to that card. All GeForce cards from Fermi (mid 400 series) to Kepler and beyond (Maxwell, Pascal, etc) will have DX12 support.

More like:

R9 280X = GTX 770
R9 290 > GTX 780
R9 290X < GTX 780 Ti

(assuming good coolers on the 290 and 290X, reference is garbage)

The reality is, just like every other generation of GPU releases (with a few exceptions) - the AMD card will be faster in some games, the Nvidia card will be faster in others. When making a choice, it's best to look at the charts and what you play, to find the "winner" for you.

You also have to consider other technologies such as Mantle, G-Sync, Shadowplay, etc - if that makes a difference to you.

The competitors MSRPs are set to battle each other, not sure where the bitcoin mining craze has the GPU market now, but it made the GTX 770 purchase a no brainer for me (as the 280 was grossly overpriced at the time).

Within a moderate percentage the below is true + or - the other factors mentioned:

GTX 760 - R 270
GTX 770 - R 280
GTX 780 - R 290
GTX 780 ti - no comparison really.

The (radeon) X designation on the cards represents a slightly faster version, but it's more or less the same performance bracket. In some instances, the non X version is actually faster, depending on the use of reference vs non reference coolers, etc. Example = Sapphire's 290 with the good cooler vs Raden reference 290X that is a slower performer due to heat issues.
