I'm in a position to pick up an HP Elitebook 8460p with an i5 (dual core) and 4GB of RAM, can this model take the i7 (quad core) and the 16BG of RAM (as listed in the optional hardware on HP's website) or does that require a different motherboard? I've heard both answers from my associates and would like it all cleared up before I replace my dying laptop with the 8460p.

I'm used to building my own desktops but I've never tried to pry open a laptop before. So this would not only be a replacement laptop, but a chance to expand my knowledge and tinker with some different hardware. Thanks for the help!

Did some more digging. The motherboard supports the slot, but I'll have to do some BIOS upgrades/modifications to run the i7 and the dedicated Radeon installed in the model I'm picking up (most common glitch is the i7 supported BIOS attempting to boot to integrated intel graphics). Sounds like a fun project! I think I'll learn a lot during the upgrade (I already have! Laptop's are so finicky). Thanks for the nudge in the right direction. Gave me a couple different things to google and got my answers.

I have the same laptop and would like to do the same thing.
Did it work for you?

I never got the chance to try it out. I ended up getting a Tablet for my work related computing; I also got engaged, moved to a new place across town, and life got busy! Sorry mate.
