I just replced my motherboard after the old one died. Everything seemed to be going well until it shut down. Thinking it was a random update i just started it back up. Then it kept happening but i just couldnt reproduce it. I thought it was overheating, but it only got to 40c . I replaced the thermal paste and then it got cooler but still was shutting off. Ive looked for answers but everywhere says its the PSU but i just was using it less than 24hours ago. Is there a way the motherboard could of broke the PSU when the mobo died? My build is

-Asus M5A97 R2.0
-AMD FX 8320 stock heatsink/fan
-16gb of GSKILL ripjaws x RAM
-GTX 660 ti GPU
-Rosewill Green Series RG630-S12 630W

Like i said EVERYTHING was working perfect before the old mobo died. But now it seems to shut off randomly. Its doing it less now, but still happening. I can play a game but as soon as the game ends itll turn off anywhere from 10s-5mins later. But not always. Ive read that it could be a WIN7 problem and i should reinstall. Does that sound like it could be an issue. Before i run all the way back to the store to replace the MB/PSU? Thanks.

It's usually the other way around - When a PSU goes bad, it sometimes nukes the motherboard. From what you are describing, it's probably either the MB or PSU that is bad here...
A bad windows install won't prevent you from getting to BIOS, so you can pretty much rule that out. It sounds like a hardware issue.

Mobo could have sent spike to PSU and PSU is now hitting a saftey limit and shutting off.

Go to start, right click on Computer, go to properties, advanced system settings, advanced tab, under statup and recovery click settings, and uncheck automatic restart.

If you still have the machine turning off it is PSU related. If it is a blue screen then it is a different issue

I can get to the bios. I can do a lot. I made sure all the words were plugged in. The store is far away so making trips there isn't ideal. The old motherboard was updating the bios and it froze up and then the power was shut off. So it ended up being dead. Still have a warranty and will send it back. Could the PSU of messed up from that?

No bsod either. No warning. Thanks for the help. Will try the automatic restate when I get home. If not, should I replace the mobo or PSU first. I'd have to buy a new PSU but can replace the mb.

Sometimes windows will crash but will restart without give you a BSOD, the steps i said earlier will force windows to give you a BSOD if it crashes.

This will for sure tell you if you it is power supply or not.

Alright. So if it BSODs it's PSU. Or will it say where the problem is.

No, if it BSODs then it is NOT the psu.

If it shuts straight off then it is the PSU

Windows can decide to restart if it detects a ram or video card problem, driver problem, etc; it can not decide to restart if it abruptly looses all power.
