I would sincerely appreciate some help with this problem. Recently, I have built a desktop unit for myself to play steam games. After a new installation of windows, I downloaded updates for all of my hardware and software as well as AVG antivirus, and other miscellaneous applications. Once I completed the installation of Steam and my few games, and began to play, I began to experiencing problems directly related to the HL2 engine. These crashes occurred as follows: I would start the game, connect to a server, and everything would be fine, and then several minutes into the game, The game would crash with graphical errors and/or sound looping, or it would crash directly to the desktop, sometimes displaying an error message, and sometimes not. Also of note, the GPU was not stressed at all by the game. After this, I re-installed my graphics drivers, as well as the game, and tried it again, with the same result. I then verified the integrity of the game's cache, which came up with no errors. I tried once more to play the game, to no avail. I tried to play Garry's mod, and this game too suffered similar results! Most of the time the games would simply randomly exit straight to the desktop with no indication whatsoever! Any help would be much appreciated. My Specs are:

-Intel Core 2 Quad E4400 2.0 GHz (new thermal paste, never overclocked, runs below 50°)
-Intel DG965RY motherboard (Updated BIOS and drivers, never overclocked)
-Axiom 2 GB DDR2 PC6400 800 MHz 1.8 Volt Ram (Never overclocked)
-Nvidia Quadro FX570 256 MB (Updated drivers, never overclocked, idles @ 55°)
-WD Caviar 80 GB HDD 7200 RPM
-WD Caviar 500 GB HDD 7200 RPM (unformatted)
-Antec TruePower Trio 650 Watt power supply
-TP-Link 300 mbps PCI wireless networking card (b/g/n) (updated drivers)
-Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE (Updated drivers)

Windows XP 32-bit Service Pack 3
-Has been fully updated by Automatic Updates
-Has .NET framework 4.0
-Directx 9.0

You might try downgrading the driver a bit? Look around for perhaps a more stable (the most up to date doesn't ALWAYS mean best) driver version.

I play a lot of Steam games as well, and Valve has a funny way of accessing devices sometimes. Otherwise I don't have much clue as to why this could be happening. You mention you have an 80GB HDD, is that used for the games?

If you're having crashes and the HDD is topped off (full 80GB or very close to it) you could see some performance problems, errors or crashes. That's about all I can think of that you haven't mentioned specifically.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply. I did downgrade the drivers several times to older releases, however the issue was not resolved. Also, my hard drive is only halfway full, and it hasn't been giving me any trouble at all. Thanks for giving it your best shot!
