Hi I'm getting a new processor late may and I was wondering what I can get to have a good/decent cpu for gaming and still be in a budget of 120$ or lower. I am quite content with my Phenom II X4 965 right now but it is an old cpu and I am looking for a new gpu and I don't want it to be bottlenecked so I decided why not upgrade my cpu to something better but not expensive.

Edit: I have an ASUS m5 a97 mobo right now

Your probably looking at 3-4 compared to a newer processor for most games. Some very CPU intensive games...

An asus m5 a97 mobo

your motherboard supports an fx 6300 which comes in at your budget and is a decent gaming cpu. having said that, there are many games that the fx6300 (or even an 8350) wont be any faster at than your current phenom 965. Is there any particular game your having performance issues with?

Not really but I am just looking for a processor that won't bottleneck the new gpu I'm getting (stuck between GTX 660 and 760)

The 965 you currently got is not going to bottleneck a GTX 660 nor a 760. I've just upgraded to a GTX 770 and I'm still using my 955 BE with it. Monitored utilization in at least 5 recent games and never got the CPU on higher than 80% and that only for a split second. The GPU was on 100% at this time.

I'm not saying you won't see some difference (in general) but with your budget (i.e. FX 6300) in game it won't be more than 3-4 FPS IF any at all.

Better save up and wait til the new Intels are out.

So you're saying that if I get a new gpu, my processor will only bottleneck it a little? How many frames would I lose then?

Looking for affordable yet can be easy but you need to consider the quality of the product and the time that it will serve its purpose. I am more on the performance of the processor even if it cost me more compared to those low performing one.

What are some of the cpu intensive games?
