Hi,
I am deciding between two motherboards for the AM3+ FX-6300 to overclock.

One being with a 970 chipset but with an 8+2 power phase, capable of overclocking.
I can get this with the 6300 for only $49.99.

The other is a 990fx chipset also from gigabyte, that can crossfire/sli and maybe can overclock better with the larger vrms..? I can bundle this with the 6300 for $94.99.

I do not know if I want to crossfire/sli in the future. My first gpu will be a r9 270. The Asus boards were an option for me, but the 970 Asus isn't the correct size and the 990 is a little pricier than the gigabyte.

Is the 990fx mobo worth the extra $45 o or are there any other better boards to overclock at those prices?

Thanks,
Isaac

The 990fx seems really good, but maybe you could go for a sweetspot and try to get 8+2 power phasing and 990fx. For overclocking, overall, try to go for 8+2 power phasing and a good chipset (like the 990fx).

You need to work out what your future needs are going to be. I like the idea of having the option to XFire/SLI. And if you figure you'll overclock your CPU and RAM then more phases is a bonus. But sometimes there are other features people like - more DDR3 slots, more USB3.0, better sound, etc
