The board that I have is the GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3P AM3+/AM3 AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard. I lost the manual and I am pretty new to installing ssds. I know that I have to change something in my BIOS, but I am not sure what. Please help!

The latest SATA, which would be SATA3 6gb/s. Hope this helps! You don't have to change anything in the BIOS. The different SATA ports are sometime coloured, which indicates SATA3 6gb/s. The one on my MB is white.

If you've lost the manual for the board then I would highly recommend finding a downloadable version or emailing the manufacturer for a copy.

That aside, the slot you plug the SSD into doesn't make too much difference if they're all Sata 3.0 you'll just need to make sure that your SSD is selected as your first boot device if you have more than 1 bootable drive attached.

You can download a pdf manual off the product page on gigabyte's site. If your board has a secondary controller for raid be sure to put the ssd one one of the primary controller ports and it really doesn't matter which port, you set boot order in the bios.

They might be talking about changing to AHCI mode (the setting should be somewhere under the hard drives and/or SATA settings in the BIOS).

Other than that, as said before, just make sure it goes into the intel sata port as opposed to any third party sata ports that some boards come with (so don't put it into any asmedia, marvell, etc. sata ports)
