Display exceeds parameters, lowered the display setting and re-installed the drivers, what next?

I set my monitor to the max settings and tried to play a game (SWTOR to be precise) on a computer I built just a week ago with Windows 7 and an ASUS GTX 650 1gb card. As the game starts up, everything shrinks and the monitor goes black and says Display exceeds the parameters. I boot it up into safe mode minimize the display settings, restart it, the bios welcome screen shows up, then the windows welcome screen shows up for a bit, but then exceeds parameters before the log in screen shows up.I delete the drivers in safe mode, re-install them and the same the error message.

The monitor is still good, with a max resolution of 1920x1080, and yet still won't open on 1280x1024.

I have exhausted the limits of my knowledge and Google isn't giving me any ideas. :??::??::??: I'd really appreciate some help with this.

It's a Benq 22" LCD monitor, about 4 years old, but rarely used. I'm using a VGA cable now, but waiting for a DVI cable that I order to arrive. Any help would be appreciated.
