I have 6 SATA connections on my motherboard and only three devices (Optical Drive, Hard Drive, SSD) that require SATA cables. Does it matter which slot or which order I plug these into? I was just going to plug the SATA into slot 1, hard drive into 2, and the optical drive into 3.

Just wanted to double check before I mess this up! First time building a PC.

Thank you!

Does not matter. I usually just use them in order so I know were stuff is. The only times it matters are if you have extra SATA ports from a different chip in which case they will be a different color.

Obviously, if you have SATA III devices (most likely the SSD and/or HDD) you want those plugged into the proper SATA III connectors (if applicable).

If this doesn't apply, then, yes, you can plug the connections in any port.

It does not matter for Windows which generates a drive map based on signatures instead of interface numbers. Under Linux where drives are often mounted based on named interfaces, moving drives around will require some bootloader parameters and mounting table editing.

Put the SSD on the SATA 1 port. As long as you do not have multiple hard drives it will not matter though

SSDs should be connected to native 6Gb/s SATA ports for best performance.

If you have an Intel CPU then the Intel 6Gb/s SATA ports are the native ports.
If you have an AMD CPU then the AMD 6Gb/s SATA ports are the native ports.

SSDs will work on 3rd party SATA ports such as ASMedia or Marvell, but just not as well.

It doesn't matter what port you connect your optical drive or HDD to, you will get maximum performance from any port.
