Ok strange question but here goes. I am getting a new PSU and graphics card. I believe that some cards require a separate/extra electrical plug, yes? I mean some cards just snap into the pci slot and then some other cards do that but also have a separate power plug. I don't know how else to word it. My question is, how do you know before ordering the card if it take a separate plug because some reviews I have read mention that the purchaser then had to order a six pin plug or something and wish they had known that when they ordered the card.

What is the card in question? The site selling the card will specify in the specs section how many PCI auxiliary plugs are needed (6 and 8 pins respectively)

The "plugs" you are referring to usualy look like that and the cable comes out of the PSU so you don't need to buy any additional cables/converters. Just read the PSU description to see what PCI-e support it provides.

For example in the description of NZXT Hale Power 90+ 550W '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply it says:

• Latest GPU support, ideal for latest DX11 GPUs and comes with 8pin and 8(6+2) pin PCI-E connectors.
