Hi, so i'm about to purchase an operating system for my gaming PC as my trial of windows 7 has just expired and I was wondering if I should bother re-imaging my PC for windows 8. I had a couple questions.

1. How much (if any at all) is Windows 8 superior to Windows 7 for gaming performance? (and why).
2. Will Direct X 12 be supported on Windows 7? or only on Windows 8 like DX 11.1 and 11.2 are?
3. Are compatibility issues with games on Windows 8 a common thing?
4. Finally, which one would be the best investment for gaming?

Cheers!

For some reason I absolutely can't stand Windows 8.

Actually exactly 2 days ago I decided to give 8.1 a try and it lasted for about 12 minutes in total. Looking at performance gain in some games it does look like Windows 8.1 manages to squeeze a few extra frames per second though. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/11/24/battlefield_4...

Now as much as I hate to admit it though I guess it's better to go for Windows 8.1 as it's a new OS and all that. Sadly I can't back up this with personal experience facts though.

I was hesitant to use windows 8 when I built my new PC last fall after helping my parents with their win 8 laptop. However I can tell you after two days of using windows 8 on my new computer, along with 8.1 and the updates I actually enjoy the new OS, just need to spend some time with it.

1) There are slight gaming performances, none to write home about.
2) No information has been released on Direct X 12 support, so no one knows.
3) Depends on how old the game is in all honesty, although I have been running games that are upwards of 4 years old on it.
4) 8 would be as it is the newest, and if any system gets Direct X 12 it will be win 8.

Look back through some history of Microsoft Windows.

Windows 98 - good
Windows 2000 - crap
Windows XP - good
Windows Vista - crap
Windows 7 - good
Windows 8 - crap

You get the idea.

Bag yourself a copy of Windows 7, it would be foolish of Microsoft to abandon it when DX12 is released, especially considering that the DX12 target audience (gamers and enthuiasts) will be using that OS.

1. i really saw difference in windows 8.1 ( games would run much smoother ) . future games will be more optimized for windows 8.1 & older games seem to run faster because its newer anyway . the reason why is optimization & windows 8.1 being newer & faster than windows 7 .

2. no it will come with windows 8.1 but DXDiag still mentions directx version as 11.0 i heard it will come as update for windows 8.1 , but it will come for windows 8.1 only

3. there are no compatibility issues . i havnt seen any , even with older games .

4.windows 8.1 for sure :D

extra info : i really didnt like windows 8.1 new UI & with few free tools i could keep the good things of windows 8.1 & restore windows 7 functionality & ease of use . i can list all the tools i have used to do so if you want :)

by the way windows 8 is crap . go for windows 8.1 :D

Shut up Dukinuki. I would rather U have Windows 7 and besides 8.1 is as unstable as hell. Besides games like MW2, MW1 or Doom 3 would not run on 8.1.

I havent play other games yet but I had terrible fps drops in battlefield 3 on windows 7 and when i switched to windows 8 i had no fps drops at all, but that may be because windows 8 uses less ram and I have only 2gb

To OP - get Windows 8 because you will also have a free upgrade to Windows 8.1, a free upgrade to Windows 9, a free upgrade to Windows 10 and maybe also a free upgrade to Windows 11.

There is no Windows 9. They will jump from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
