Been running my r9 28th for about a year, last week or so I have been noticing occasional screen tears, similar to a 1990s vcr recording. Usually in small bursts, temps were always fine, today it crashed on start up, one screen gray another light blue, solid screens. Ran the computer in safe mode then back in normal mode and everything is stable except the computer no longer detects the drivers.
Done a clean reinstall on drivers, system restore, but computer doesn't detect the card. It is listed as undefined and device manager lists display adapter as vga. Is there anything to do other than rma it?

Solution
try a different PCIE slot if possible and see what happens.

start the computer without the card then restart with card in place
Try burning an Ubuntu disc, or grabbing a spare hard drive if possible to do a quick Install of Windows (don't activate) then just install the video drivers to see if it works.

I'm not quite sure if the card is defective or not. On the one hand, you had visual errors that suggested it was, but now you don't and it seems to be software.

My gut feeling is the card is defective, but if you get stumped then my best advice is the reinstall Windows + video drivers on a spare drive (or alternatively do a backup Image using Acronis True Image or similar to a 2nd drive, reinstall Windows as said, then Restore the backup Image after the test).

Other:
I always recommend running Memtest any time I hear of possible software corruption: www.memtest.org

(May need to change the BIOS boot order to DVD/USB as appropriate, and run for one FULL PASS or until errors).

Switched pcie and the card completely stopped performing, the entire screen is green static, with the picture behind it. Thanks for the help, card has to be replaced, was able to install drivers, but "card us not using resources" because it has a "problem."
