I am coming from XP and was wondering what would run faster on my computer? I HAD 7 on it a while back and it was sluggish, the computer was originally shipped with Vista.

Is Vista less resource/hardware dependent than Win 7?

Vista is considerably worse than Win7. Win8 actually is even less resource intense.

never tried Vista but I heard it's terrible. Last year I made the jump to Win7 and never looked back. It's not too different to XP (I used the XP theme for a while!), runs well and isn't a resource hog.

Vista is the second worst OS that I've ever used. Worst being Windows ME. Windows 7 is definitely a much better choice, and you can look around online to find tutorials to optimize it to be more responsive to your needs.

Definitely go for Win7. I used Vista for about 3 months but it was just terrible.
Been using Win7 since i changed to it from Vista.

Those who say Vista was terrible, never tried sp1.I used Vista sp1 from 2008-2012 with almost no issues. All games worked,no crashed,no bugs,no issues.
Microsoft must have really rectified everything in sp1 but it was already too late by then.Windows 7 was nothing but a relaunch of Vista sp1 under a new name like how the gts 250 was nothing but a rebrand of 9800gtx+ under a new name and bios update .

If Windows 7 was sluggish you would want to go with Windows 8. It requires less resources than both 7 and Vista.

If you can only choose between Vista and 7, go with 7.

You do not say what the pc is.
I would check the hard drive on that pc before you do anything, judging by your comment that 7 was laggy before. If the machine is 5 or 6 years old I would install a new drive before a new operating system install anyway.
It could save you doing it all over again in the near future.

It also depends on how much ram you have,xp runs still good on 1gb but vista and later really need a minimum of 2gb's to run properly.More ram is even better.

I had no issues with vista either btw.Only when i ran on 1gb did it run slow.because the hdd get's used a lot more than you would like.

Erm, yes, that's what I referred to. Windows 7 was sluggish on his system. So I recommended Windows 8 because it uses less resources. Not sure what the issue is there.
