My motherboard I just brought has 8 memory slots for DDR3 quad channel but I only have 4 memory sticks do I have to get another 4 sticks or will it work with just 4 sticks of RAM?

Solution
With 8 slots it more than likely is an X79 chipset and yes 4 sticks are perfectly fine, put them in the same colored slots as this mobo is capable of quad channel (memory runs as a 256 bit device) DRAM usage, rather than dual (only as 128bit). The extra boost from the DRAM running faster is nice

It will just work fine with four sticks, no need to buy any more, not unless you need to. If you're concerned about quad channel performance make sure to install all four RAMs in same colored slots, that's all you need to do, in other words, if you put RAM 1 in Slot 1 then put RAM 2 in Slot 3... RAM 3 in Slot 5... RAM 4 in Slot 7, simple.

it depends on the memory speed you use. if you run up to the max that the MMU can handle natively then you will be able to use all 8 slots. if you use faster ram say 2100 you will be limited to 1 stick per channel so if you have a quad channel board you would be limited to 4 sticks total.

either way you will get quad channel if you use 4 or 8 memory sticks...
